– Steven Din , CEO a new mine shaft to a depth of 1,500 metres , making it the deepest new shaft sinking project in Africa . The Konkola Deep Mine Project ( KDMP ) started to bring copper ore from its mid-level in 2010 and from the bottom of the shaft in 2014 . Now the deep mine is ramping up to full production , he said . “ Last year we mined just under 1.5 million tonnes of ore and this year we expect over 2 million tonnes .” It ’ s a busy place with 6,000 people working there . Apart from extracting ore , this mine has the distinction of being one of the wettest mines in the world , and every day 350,000 cubic metres of water is pumped out into settlement beds for purification , and then to the Kafue River .
