China ’ s largest open-pit coal mine belongs to Haerwusu . Located in the Inner Mongolia Autonomous Region of China , the mine is spread across the middle of the Zhungeer Coalfield and is estimated to contain 1.7 billion tons of coal reserves . Owned and operated by Shenhua Group , the Haerwusu mine began production in October 2008 , with development costs at approximately $ 1.1 billion . The giant open-pit mine is estimated to have a reserve life of more than 75 years , making it the number one coal mine in China .
