Key components of boats , planes , trains and automobiles are all dependent on the electrical and thermal properties of copper . High-speed trains can use up to 10MT of copper per kilometre of track while powerful locomotives contain as much as 8MT of the base metal . A modern airliner includes around 118 miles ( 190km ) of copper wiring which accounts for 2 % of its weight . In cars , copper and brass radiators and oil cooling systems have been the industry standard since the 1970s . In recent years , the growing use of electronic components , including the trend for onboard navigation systems and anti-lock braking , has further ramped up demand from the automotive sector . 79
