FOREWORD Mining flicks the sustainability switch
“ More investment in new technologies will further cement links between the mining and energy industries , and grow efficiencies ”
Mining can ’ t exist without energy and vice versa – it ’ s a truism worth highlighting as the energy transition accelerates .
More companies are now taking a sustainable lead . By the end of 2022 , over 20,000 solar panels will be installed to power BHP Nickel West ’ s mining , with concentrated operations at Leinster .
Sandvik , meanwhile , has sealed a SEK330mn order to supply a fleet of battery-electric trucks , loaders , drills and on-site service support for Foran Mining ’ s McIlvenna Bay project in Saskatchewan .
And such moves are just the start ; more investment in new technologies will further cement links between the two industries and grow efficiencies . Mining ’ s role in energy will be equally pivotal as demand soars for electric vehicles . Ensuring supplies keep up with demand will be the industry ’ s greatest challenge .
In time , energy and mining may become one enormous industry , with the need for power and resources all underpinned by sustainable technologies .
