PROFITABILITY NOT A DIRTY WORD IN SUSTAINABLE MINING

“ Circularity is not just an environmental imperative but also a business opportunity ”

JAKOB STAUSHOLM , CEO ,
RIO TINTO

The transition to a net-zero economy will be metals-and-minerals intensive . Copper . Lithium . Nickel . Cobalt . Manganese . Graphite . Gold . All are integral to this global venture . Yet how these metals and minerals are mined , processed , transported , consumed and recycled will also have a massive say in the pace of global progress on net zero targets .

It ’ s an extremely delicate balance to strike , and is one of many challenges facing the mining industry that we explore in this issue . Interestingly , Jakob Stausholm , CEO of Rio Tinto , the world ' s second largest metals and mining corporation , says circularity “ is not just an environmental imperative but also a business opportunity ”.
He added that , to this end , Rio Tinto is investing in R & D to extract critical minerals from waste streams and is exploring ways to repurpose mining byproducts .
We live in a commercial world , and Jakob ’ s take is a telling insight into how sustainability is likely to happen in meaningful ways , and at scale : by being both desirable , and profitable .
