He continues : “ When I think about all the technologies , the different business models and the drastic changes we need to put in place for Scope 3 emissions to go to zero in the mining value chain . For that to happen we need to innovate at scale across a number of industries , not only in the mining industry .
“ I would love my children to live in that world , and the only way we ’ re going to get there is by working together .”
Christian Spano ’ s passion for increased levels of circularity in the mining industry is mirrored by that of Jakob Stausholm , who is CEO of British-Australian multinational Rio Tinto , the world ’ s second largest metals and mining corporation .
In the company ’ s most recent sustainability report , he said that circularity “ is not just an environmental imperative but also a business opportunity ”. He added : “ At Rio Tinto , we ’ re investing in research and development to extract critical minerals from waste streams and exploring ways to repurpose mining byproducts .
“ For instance , we ’ re looking at using bauxite residue in cement production .”
The mining industry , he stresses , has a unique position to drive circular economy solutions , “ given our expertise in material sciences and large-scale operations ”.
