Albemarle has recently expanded its lithium operations to meet surging demand from the electric vehicle industry . In 2022 , the company commissioned a new lithium hydroxide processing plant in Kemerton , Western Australia , to convert spodumene ore into battery-grade lithium hydroxide . It also holds a 49 % stake in the Greenbushes lithium mine in Australia , one of the world ’ s largest sources of lithium . To further bolster its lithium production capacity , Albemarle acquired Chinese lithium producer Guangzhou Tinci Materials Technology in 2023 for $ 200 million .
