Nokia ’ s connection to the mining industry is strong , dating back 156 years . The Finnish multinational was originally founded by mining engineer Fredrik Idestam . After establishing a paper mill , the company expanded into electricity generation in 1902 before a rubber business was merged in 1922 , which saw Nokia restructured into four major businesses : forestry , cable , rubber and electronics . The early 70s saw Nokia enter the networking and radio industry , also making military equipment alongside professional mobile radios , telephone switches , capacitors and related chemicals .
